The Beginning

The premise of web design has a humble beginning. The programming language HTML – HyperText Markup Language was officially released in 1990, and it is a language used by web browsers to interpret how to display content on a screen. With the launch of Netscape Navigator in 1994, HTML managed to reach everybody’s PC’s.

From there, it has become a technological joyride. With the desktop computer as a vessel of information from the web, everyone was able to access data for research and leisure. Netscape ruled the web for about two more years since, until Microsoft launched Internet Explorer (IE).

Being a web designer in the past had an element of simplicity. Cross compatibility was not an issue since the desktop computer was the only device that could handle HTML. Rich text formatting and plain images were the main sources of design, and cascading style sheets (CSS) was unheard of.

To get back in the browser game, the team that created Navigator developed a new language that can run client-side on the computer rather than on the server. It took ten days to write the language, and it was called JavaScript.

Another company known as Macromedia bought a product called FutureSplash. They renamed it to Flash and introduced it to the market. Flash was the language responsible for animations and interactivity on many websites. It was now clear that web design is gradually taking a dynamic form.

The Problem with Cross Compatibility

As web design continues to climb its zenith, hardware manufacturers were also trying their best to keep up. The development is rampant in the production of desktop monitors–most of them are getting bigger, so web developers had to adjust their projects to support larger screen resolutions.

Designers had two choices to deal with this dilemma: they could stick with the limitations of old screen resolution, or they could abandon users on older monitors. These users needed to scroll sideways to view websites effectively, which is considered a huge mishap in web design.

This problem with cross compatibility has forced web designers to come up with new creative strategies to cater for all viewers. They believed that the premise of web design should become more dynamic than ever.

Internet Explorer, though reliable for some, is rigged with various speed problems. Firefox began increasing its share in the market in 2002, which until then was dominated by IE. Although AJAX and Dynamic HTML (DHTML) made it possible to achieve streamlined downloading of pages, is also complicated for developers to successfully program with to display properly on multiple browsers. Cross browser standards did not exist, and so therefore sometimes certain browsers didn’t support particular codes, or at least handled them differently.

In the world of web design, it seems that one problem can bring up opportunities for other developers. In 2006, jQuery was released, allowing developers to program at a faster rate. Enter Mobile Browsing

When the iPhone came out in 2007, web design has gone mobile. Flash is facing its impending death when Apple chose not to support it on the iPhone.
